Abstract
With the aim of studying the morphopathological characteristics of kidney lesions in pigs from different slaughterhouses of the Province of Manabí and establishing the association of these alterations with the presentation of some diseases that may also affect public health, 194 cases in the slaughterhouses of Rocafuerte, Tosagua and Portoviejo; making several weekly visits to these slaughter centers. The total number of animals that enter daily in the different chambers was taken as a sample, in order to determine the most common alterations that the kidneys present macroscopically. During the investigation this organ was thoroughly inspected, the following macroscopic and microscopic indicators were taken into account, such as color, size shape, appearance of the external surface and the capsule, consistency, cutting surface, cortex / medulla ratio. Microscopic studies of the cases with lesions were carried out. As evidence, photographs of the most important macro and microscopic aspects were taken, the origin of the animals where it was possible to know if they were farm or backyard animals was considered. The data obtained and recorded during the visits to the different slaughterhouses, were analyzed according to the statistical method of Comparison of Proportions, these values were expressed by tables and figures, obtaining as a result a total of 107 lesions found in 77 animals where the renal alterations that were presented as the most frequent in the three slaughterhouses were: nephrosis 17.7%, chronic nephritis 16.8%, diffuse interstitial nephritis 16.8%, renal cyst with 15.8%, congestion of the medulla 12.1%, hydronephrosis 9.3 multifocal interstitial nephritis 4.6%, haemorrhaging with only 3.7%, renal infarction 1.8%, and nephrosclerosis 0.9%. XVIII Regarding the incidence of presentation of macroscopic lesions, there were significant differences p <0.05 in favor of interstitial nephritis as a whole (53.2%), in relation to the rest of the renal alterations observed. Keywords: renal cysts, hydronephrosis, kidney malformations, nephritis, nephrosis, nephrosclerosis, marrow congestion, sanitary inspection, slaughterhouses
