dc.description.abstract Leptospira is an infectious contagious disease of worldwide distribution, being one of the diseases with the most economic losses in the livestock industry in the entire world, the cause of this disease is a bacterium of the genus Leptospira being highly contagious for animals and man. The objective of this work was to diagnose the presence of leptospira in Manabí by means of a Direct and Indirect diagnostic test, since it is one of the provinces in Ecuador very hit by this disease, leaving great economic losses year after year, this research work was carried out in the municipal slaughter center of Portoviejo, this site being an ideal place for collecting samples, since in this place animals arrive from different parts of the province of Manabí and even from other provinces. Urine and blood samples were taken from 334 animals in the Portoviejo municipal slaughterhouse, the blood was taken directly from the jugular at the time of slaughter and the urine by direct puncture in the bladder at the time of evisceration, these samples were subjected to the MAT test composed of 4 serovars (Hardjo, Tarassovi, Sejroe and Wolffii) and to the dark field microscope (DFM) test, a total of 247 blood samples were viable and subjected to the MAT, 17% reacted positively to the Less than one serovar of leptospira, the serovar that presented the highest seroreaction was Hardjo. Of the urine samples, 228 samples were viable and submitted to the DFM, in 69.3% of the samples structures compatible with leptospira were observed, no significant differences were observed between the variables, age, sex, origin of the MAT positive animals and to the DFM, seropositivity was in the same proportion for all the variables. These allow identifying the diversity of results in this pathology when various diagnostic tests are used, it is recommended not to neglect the use of personal protective equipment in slaughter activities workers.
