; Aguilar Padilla Henry Rodrigo.Leptospira is the bacterium that causes the disease called leptospirosis, it has a worldwide distribution of a zoonotic nature, frequently observed in tropical or subtropical climates, affecting domestic and wild animals, the rodent being a natural reservoir and domestic species play an important role as maintenance reservoirs, its transmission occurs directly through urine, blood infected tissues or by exposure to contaminated environments. In the following study, the prevalence of pathogenic Leptospira and the risk of infection were evaluated in five canine rescue centers in the province of Manabí, 300 blood samples were evaluated using the Microscopic Agglutination Technique (MAT) using a diagnostic panel of 9 serovars, Sejroe, Canicola, Tarassovi, Hardjo, Bataviae, Wolffii, Pomona, Australis and Castellonis, considering a cut-off point to the MAT of 1:100 to declare the sample as positive, obtaining a prevalence of 27,0%, 95%CI 22,3-32,4, a greater probability of infection in males 38,0% than in females 22,6% the probability of exposure was not higher or lower in dogs with or without a vaccination history; being the most frequent serovar Canicola with 11,0% followed by Castellonis 8,7%, Australis 7,7%, Sejroe 7,0%, Tarassovi 5,7%, Wolffii 5,3% y Bataviae 5,0%; reaching the highest titer of 1:400; a prevalence of infection in male by Dark Field Microscopy of 45,8% CI95% 32.7-59.9 were reported; It is concluded that there is a moderate prevalence of exposure and high prevalence of infection with pathogenic Leptospira in dogs from rescue centers, with leads to generating an alert of the risk of transmission between animals in these centers, as well as possible people who adopt a pet.
