USO DE LA ANESTESIA PERIDURAL EN CIRUGIA ABDOMINAL ALTA REALIZADAS EN EL HOSPITAL VERDI CEVALLOS BALDA 2005-2006

Abstract

Thoracic epidural blockade is an extremely useful anesthetic and analgesic technique in clinical practice. In this review we analyzed the factors that restrict its use in routine practice and attempt, within the confínes of strict professional responsibility and with a clear knowledge of pathophysiological mechanisms. Emphasis is placed in its anatomic basis, and related technical considerations. Likewise, we describe its physiological effects on various organic systems. It also is important to know the major indications. The anesthesiologist should be aware of the complications of thoracic epidural blockade, and, more importantly, prevent them. The responsibility for teaching this technique requires that the apprentice have sufficient previous experience with lumbar epidural block. This study presents 50 patients in surgical room of Verdi Cevallos Balda Hospital in whom thoracic or lumbar epidural puncture was performed, as part of their anesthetic management. It is a safe technique on the hands of anesthesiologists with previous training on these types of procedures.
