dc.description The present study aimed to evaluate the advantages of the Downton Scale in the elderly. The research is a quantitative exploratory, prospective study conducted at the IESS Hospital of Portoviejo, the source of information was secondary since it was based on the collection of data from the medical records with the corresponding permits from the relevant authorities of the Institution in the period of May-July 2017. The sample of the study is the population because it was finite and manageable, the variables, risk assessment and risk of falling in the elderly. The conclusion was that the application of the Downton scale is very helpful in determining the risk of falls in the elderly and that the elderly are more at risk of sensory deficit and that they use drugs, especially benzodiazepines and antidepressants. es_ES
dc.description.abstract El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar las ventajas de la Escala de Downton en los adultos mayores atendidos en el hospital del IESS de Portoviejo. La investigación es un estudio de modalidad cuantitativa explorativo, prospectivo que se realizó en el Hospital IESS de Portoviejo, la fuente de información fue secundaria ya que se basó en la recolección de datos de las historias clínicas con los permisos correspondiente de las autoridades pertinentes de la institución en el periodo de Mayo Julio 2017. La muestra del estudio es la población debido a que ésta era finita y manejable, las variables empleadas fueron; valoración de riesgo de caídas y grado de conocimiento. Como conclusión se obtuvo que la aplicación de la escala de Downton es de gran ayuda para determinar el riesgo de caída en los adultos mayores y que mayor riesgo tienen los adultos mayores con déficit sensitivo y que utilicen medicamentos sobre todo benzodiacepinas y antidepresivos. es_ES
